Washington, DC – The Wind and Water Power Technologies Office (WWPTO) within the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) has released the Hydropower Vision Report, one of the most comprehensive analyses of the future of environmental stability through renewable hydropower in the United States.

Over the last two years, Allegheny Science & Technology (AST) has been providing support to this first-of-its-kind report and WWPTO’s mission to make it a reality through the contribution of key team members. The Hydropower Vision Report explains the social, economic, and environmental benefits of hydropower. The report includes a roadmap based on three pillars: Optimization, Growth, and Sustainability. This roadmap outlines the means to successfully achieve the stated benefits and taking steps toward a more efficient future using hydropower.

The report was developed by teams of experts from government, academia, and industry including AST’s Marisol Bonnet, lead author for the “Roadmap” chapter, Lauren Peterson, who provided quality assurance, and Rich Tusing, who also served in lead roles throughout draft stages of the report. “AST is very proud to have great technical professionals like you on our team,” said AST CEO, Arria Hines.

According to the report, by 2050, hydropower could save $209 billion from avoiding greenhouse gas emissions, $58 billion from avoided damages due to air pollution, and 30 trillion gallons of water.

“The Department and my office feels fortunate to have experts from AST with the critical skills sets needed to make an effort like this a reality,” said Jose Zayas, Director for the WWPTO at the DOE. “Through their contributions and leadership, we believe that the Vision report meets our original objective of making a meaningful contribution to the future of the hydropower industry.”
