There are moments in leadership when the path ahead is clear and the answers come easily. And then there are seasons like the one many of us are in now – marked by constant change, uncertainty, and decisions that rarely come with perfect information. In times like these, leadership isn’t about having everything figured out. It’s about showing up to help people move forward even when the picture is still coming into focus.
Earlier in my career, I worked in environments where uncertainty was simply unaddressed- support was scarce and people were left to navigate the chaos on their own. I think we all know the feeling of trying to operate in the dark without the support we need. Yet, those experiences shaped me. They taught me how destabilizing it can feel when leadership disappears precisely when it’s needed most. These experiences also clarified the kind of culture I’d want to one day shape here at AST. A culture of intentionally building something different.
What gives me confidence now isn’t that we have all the answers (we don’t!). What we do have however is a strong foundation we’ve laid together over years of shared work, shared values, and shared accountability. We’ve invested in our culture. We’ve built strong teams. We’ve earned trust by doing what we say we’ll do. In uncertain moments, that foundation matters more than any single decision, all-hands email, memo, or social media post.
Leadership in these seasons looks like consistency. Transparency. Imperfection.
It looks like communicating honestly, even when the message is “we’re still working through it.” It looks like empowering people to lead where they stand, trusting their judgment, and reinforcing that they are not alone. Confidence in challenging times doesn’t come from certainty—it comes from knowing you’re supported, informed, and empowered to step into new territory.
I believe deeply in the people of AST. I believe in our leadership. I believe in our bedrock values that have forged who we are today.
I see the care, the resilience, and the commitment they bring to our work, especially when things feel unsettling or chaotic. Our role as leaders, now more than ever, is to protect that trust, to steady the pace, and to keep us moving forward together with purpose- even if the map is blurry.
We may not know every turn ahead—but we know who we are. And that makes all the difference.
