On this International Women’s Day, we wanted to take a moment to recognize and celebrate the incredible women who have made an impact on our careers, our industry, and beyond. We asked our staff, “Who is one woman who has inspired you in your professional journey?” and this is what they shared. Thank you to everyone who shared their stories- read them all below!
Melanie White
Fifteen years ago, during an incredibly stressful period in my life, Melanie gave me my first opportunity to step into the role of a full-time federal proposal manager. At the time, I was working as a Marketing Director at an AE firm in Pennsylvania, overseeing all their proposals, though not exclusively in the federal sector.
Melanie has always been, and continues to be, a source of inspiration for many of us in the proposal industry. Her dedication extends beyond her professional achievements—whether through her tireless efforts in Breast Cancer Awareness, participating in walks across nearly every East Coast state, or her numerous professional presentations at APMP conferences. She has a remarkable ability to inspire everyone she meets, works with, and socializes with. Outside of my mother, I can’t think of another woman I aspire to be like more.

Oprah Winfrey
Oprah Winfrey inspires me through her resilience, authenticity, and dedication to uplifting others. Her ability to overcome obstacles, build an empire rooted in purpose, and use her platform for meaningful change motivates me to approach my career with confidence, integrity, and a commitment to making a positive impact.

Arria Hines
I am honored to highlight the remarkable leadership and compassion of our CEO, Arria Hines. Arria is not only a visionary for AST; she is a passionate leader who consistently goes above and beyond for her team.
When my daughter was in the hospital, Arria took time out of her demanding schedule to visit us. Her presence brought comfort and reassurance, reminding me of the supportive culture she nurtures at AST.
Arria is more than a boss – she is a role model and mentor to many, especially to the women at AST. She leads with strength and empathy, demonstrating that success is not just about reaching your goals but also about lifting others along the way.
Today, let us all draw inspiration from Arria’s unwavering commitment and resilience. Here’s to strong women: may we know them, may we be them, may we raise them.
Thank you, Arria, for your leadership and your heart. Happy International Women’s Day!

Angelica Guzman
I worked closely alongside Angela as a member of the funding determination committee at the Idaho National Laboratory. These were difficult and intimidating meetings where she was commonly the only women in the room of highly educated and intelligent researchers and managers. She taught me that effective leadership in difficult conversations requires gaining a deep understanding of the subject matter in advance. Her diligence and knowledge inspired me showing that confidence comes when you are well prepared.

Sylvia Plath
“It’s a hell of a responsibility to be yourself. It’s much easier to be somebody else or nobody at all.” ~ Sylvia Plath [author]
My career path has been unconventional but, for the most part, uniquely me. I have always been most comfortable just being Mel but that also comes with the responsibility of accepting the consequences of my choices. The decision to take this approach has ultimately made me a better leader and advocate for my teams.

Emily Calendralli
Emily Calandrelli is such an inspiration to me! As a fellow West Virginian, I love seeing someone from our state reach for the stars—literally—and make such a huge impact in STEM. Her journey from Morgantown to becoming a leader in space exploration and science communication is a testament to hard work, perseverance, and never losing sight of where you come from. She’s not just breaking barriers; she’s making science exciting and accessible for the next generation, especially young women. Her passion, leadership, and ability to bring people together around big ideas are exactly what we need more of in this world, and I’m so grateful for the example she sets!

Lois Barr
I would like to tell you about Lois Barr, an attorney that I worked with for many years. Lois was one of the first women attorneys to join the law firm of Parson Behle & Latimer. She was very knowledgeable about employment law and was always willing to share her knowledge with you. I left the Utah based firm and moved back to Idaho and started a career in Human Resources. I worked at the INL and local Idaho Falls companies in this capacity. Lois was always there to help answer my tough questions even though I no longer worked for the firm. She was a mentor and a friend and always encouraged me to stretch.

Beverly Hines
My inspiration is my mom, Beverley. She raised me to be respectful and kind to everyone, especially women. She was what used to be called “a Women’s Libber” back in the day, but that term was sexist, in my opinion, because she was more of a “Human Libber.” She taught me that every human has value, and you cannot be in the position to judge someone until you have walked a mile in their shoes.
