Allegheny Science & Technology (AST) is celebrating Chief Executive Officer Arria Hines, who was honored Wednesday evening with the 2026 Distinguished Citizen Award from the Mountaineer Area Council of Scouting America. The annual recognition celebrates individuals and organizations whose leadership, service and commitment to their communities reflect the values of Scouting, while raising critical support for programs serving young people throughout northern West Virginia and eastern Ohio.
Hines received the award during the North Central West Virginia Distinguished Citizens Dinner at the Erickson Alumni Center in Morgantown. EQT Corporation was also honored as the 2026 Outstanding Company for its leadership, service and commitment to the region.
“I am truly honored and incredibly grateful to receive this recognition,” said Hines. “West Virginia is home, and this state and its people have given me so much throughout my life and career. I’ve always believed that when you’re given opportunities, you have a responsibility to help create them for others. Giving back, opening doors and helping the next generation see what is possible right here in our state has always been incredibly important to me.”
A West Virginia native, Hines founded AST in 2009 and has grown the company from a West Virginia startup into a nationally recognized woman-owned small business supporting critical federal technology, energy and defense missions.
But her influence extends well beyond AST. A passionate champion for West Virginia, STEM and the next generation of leaders, Hines has made mentorship, service and creating opportunities for others a hallmark of her career.
That commitment came to life Wednesday evening through heartfelt stories and tributes from friends, colleagues and leaders who have been part of her journey. U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito and former U.S. Senator Joe Manchin were among those who shared video tributes honoring Hines and reflecting on her leadership, service and commitment to West Virginia.
“I hope the next generation of West Virginians knows they do not have to leave this state to dream big, build something meaningful or make an impact,” Hines added. “There is tremendous talent here, and our job as leaders is to make sure young people have the opportunity, encouragement and support to realize just how far they can go.”
Hines joins a distinguished group of past honorees that includes Hershel “Woody” Williams, E. Gordon Gee, David C. Hardesty Jr., Bob Huggins, Major General (Ret.) James Hoyer, Jeff Hostetler and other prominent business and community leaders.
The Mountaineer Area Council serves young people across 22 counties in northern West Virginia and eastern Ohio through programs focused on leadership, character, citizenship and life skills. Proceeds from the Distinguished Citizens Dinner support those programs and expand opportunities for youth throughout the region.
